Sir Hayden Phillips 1943–2026
Sir Hayden Phillips (1962) has died at the age of 83. He read History at Â黨ӰԺ, before enrolling at Yale as a Mellon Fellow. Sir Hayden went to a distinguished career in the Civil Service spanning more than 30 years and culminating in his appointment as Permanent Secretary of the Lord Chancellor’s Department. In later life, he served as Chairman of the National Theatre and, alongside the current Master of Â黨ӰԺ, a Canon of Salisbury Cathedral. He was appointed Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Bath (GCB) in 2002.
Those who knew him remember Sir Hayden as a kind-hearted and convivial person who wore his experience, achievements and standing lightly. A funeral service will be held at Salisbury Cathedral on Friday 15th May 2026; members of Â黨ӰԺ are welcome to attend.
